Standards Compliance and Portability - HBdc and TIA

Some Thoughts on Standards Compliance and Portability

Here at HinkyboxDotCom, our crack staff of engineers represent the bleeding edge of web design; as a group, they expend copious amounts of intellectual, psychological and physical energy melding captivatingly stylish design with the absolute necessity that is standards compliance. These standards, as laid down by some of the brightest and far-thinking(est?) computer scientists of our time, represent an ideal vision of not only the world wide web of today, but also of the bustling, content-rich web of the future.

As you probably already know, this site is a veritable beehive of activity; the staff hardly know what to do with the plethora of content at hand. This in and of itself is not a problem. Content, when it is plentiful, is a blessing to a web site. The issue is the shape of the content. Very often the content is too diverse to hold within any sort of template—and this amorphousness puts a strain on the entire process of providing this content to the end user (you).

Not to worry!

The good people at Hinky³, always guided by principles, have recently made public a long-running but covert program designed to increase the portability of the information aggregated on HBdc. This program was far reaching in its scope, and involved a group of well-traveled operatives, scouring the globe for answers to this infotech conundrum. As your moderator, I am pleased to announce the stunning success of this mission. No longer will end-users be saddled with the demands of average web content (mocking pantomime quotes if you please) - that is to say, a relatively fast personal computer, an expensive operating system, and a broadband connection. No, our quest for portability has eliminated these stumbling blocks between you and what the U.S. government likes calls T.I.A.: Total Information Awareness.

So friends—saddle up and get your no-need-for-thinking-caps on. . . HBdc is here, HBdc is there, HBdc is everywhere. No need to get dressed in the morning, and screw walking the dog. The sun is breaking forth on a new age of reason - a new paradigm possessed of unwavering personal satisfaction and an ideal existence of blissful and content-rich living. Hell, I need not risk overreaching with words; I will let images do my persuading from here on out.

Godspeed, fellow traveler!

Brilliant article, Josh. Very entertaining. And I LOVE the new header!

Yeah, I thought it was funny.

Then again, I laugh when people fall down.

"Hinkybox. Where primary colors come to die." Brilliant. LOL

Hey Josh,
Loving the new look, the new header's excellent. Damn at this rate I'm gonna have to redesign to keep up with ya mang. ;)

Yeah thanks bubs. I think the grey is an improvement, but overall I am unhappy with the complexity of the layout.

About the header - when all else fails, fall back to what you know -- And I know fractals and smartass remarks. :P

Since my last visit there have been 0 new posts and 0 new comments. Since we have been talking about traffic statistics, I have to consider whether this facility is good or bad for traffic. On the one hand, I have to say that it is bad for duration of sessions at least. I fly by, see nothing new and am off immediately, almost as quickly as a bot or crawler. So this would be bad for stats since it registers a hit but not a session.

But then I consider the way in which it has made my task so much easier. Instead of having to scroll down the page, I am given the info I'm here for without delay and can then make up my mind to stay or not. The benefits for the user are immediately apparent and I have to admit that this encourages me to visit, knowing that I will not be conned into longer visits than necessary. Overall, it is a brilliant idea, more customer orientated than anything I've seen before. Well done, Josh, and thank you for thinking of me first, rather than your stats. In the end, I'm sure the stats will improve as a result.

I have trouble with simplicity in code. I like things complex. the number of images on this page alone would probably stun most people.

I have a crappy relic of a web server.

I use a cable account to serve these pages.

It would be criminally stupid of me to not make such accomodations, penny-ante as they might be, eh? ;-)

You, sir, are a gentleman and a scholar.

All this time I figured you guys were using your readers to get here, skipping the index page. I must admit it was a selfish thing, as it is a time-saver for me too. That, and well... so I could say I did it, I guess. After having an idea that seems within the scope of my coding ability, I just launch into it . Code for code's sake, I suppose.

You mentioned all the link referrals to your blog from this site? Well,
if you noticed, they are probably mostly from 68.50.253.214, as I use the RSS feed to see if there are new posts. :>

Oh I realise that it's your reader having a look, Josh. But hey, it helps the stats. ;) I have stopped using SharpReader at the moment because it slows this ancient machine so much (and besides, it's fun to go on a quick tour of the blogs now and then).

Josh, c'mon mang, let's be having a tutorial on how you did that header image! Graphics is one of my weaker areas and I'd appreciate an insight into your techniques. You after all the PSP gooroo. :>

Umm, okay man :>

I will set to tonight.
