Well

I have been doing some serious construction on this site.

If you notice anything going haywire, I would be in your debt if you would leave a note.

Thanks! ◊

17 Missives So Far

No problems that I can see, Josh. Mmmmm, nice cookie...

02 Joshua Estell said on Wed Dec 31 23:00:01 EST
yeah, now that I have decided to straighten up the joint , I figured a cookie was something worthwhile -- coupled with a very strong email obfuscator (that I built myself muahahaha) and a whole slew of backend Emmm Proov Monts.
I realize it is not the most exciting website in the world, and again I thank you for stopping in Gone. I have been absent on your site the lsat few days, but only because I have had my head in either in the books or in the code. Damn this hobby!

03 Gone Away said on Wed Dec 31 23:00:01 EST
Ooh, it filled itself in! Very clever, Josh, I like it. :D So that's what the cookie was for. No wonder it said "eat me" on it... Josh, it is an honor to have you visit and to leave your well informed comments at any time. And, contrary to your suspicions, I find your website very interesting and a pleasure to behold. I am quite sure that I am not the only one to declare: "Good work, sir. Pray, continue!"

Well, I appreciate that sincerely, Mr. Allen. I suppose my site-deprecating statement stems from a recent comment from someone who said my website was "far too muted in color" -- to which I smugly replied "The operative words being >MY< website". This reaction was defensive, sure, but only because it hit a nerve. :>

Invariably, you see, I start a design idea with some bold lunatic color -- but it always ends up somewhere in the middle saturations. I figured I best not give it too much thought, but I suppose this means but two things : 1.) I like muted colors  and 2.) The stocking of my refrigerator does not depend on my graphic design skills. :P

Hey is this thing working again? :>
*runs*

Hey your cookies work. I like it. Now if I can just figure out how to access the cookies on my site that .NET deploys automagically I can catch you up. And hey the contents of my fridge depend on this kind of stuff and I like your muted tones very much, so you could call that a professional opinion.

07 Gone Away said on Wed Dec 31 23:00:01 EST
Yup, I'm with muted colors too. I don't want to be assaulted by garish colors on my monitor, especially before I've had that first coffee of the morning...

I did that "p:first-letter{}" thing on my last layout too and then got told off for mixing Serif and Sans-serif fonts. I still have a sneeking like for it though :>

09 Joshua Estell said on Wed Dec 31 23:00:01 EST
Oh dear. I suppose whoever told you off might want to dig up and scold about 5 generations of typesetters :P I avoided the element:pseudo-class thingo for my stuff -- It is CSS2, so it dies pretty often. Nope, I just used the ol' <span style="font-size : 1.75em;color : #666; font-family : Times, .... , ... ">W</span>. :-)

10 Gone Away said on Wed Dec 31 23:00:01 EST
And what, pray tell, do typesetters know about design? Thou shalt not mix serif and sans serif fonts in the same line: the first rule of decent presentation.

11 Gone Away said on Wed Dec 31 23:00:01 EST
Wow, I've just noticed Josh's rollovers. It might be because my machine's so slow but when you run the mouse over the exchange and home buttons, they fill up with blue from the bottom, like with liquid! Sooooo cool, man!

12 Joshua Estell said on Wed Dec 31 23:00:01 EST
So I didn't know what a typesetter did. Big deal. Not sure how one explains the Drop Cap thing in the guilded manuscripts of old -- though the whole book was serif, one certainly cannot argue with an ornate first letter. About the rollovers - yeah, I am proud of those guys. I dug up an old concept (radiogenix three) for that -- all it takes is the patience to work pixel for pixel, and a good animation program like Jasc Aniation Shop 3.

Oh yeah - I am trying out a new function I happened across that turns regular newlines into compliant line breaks, and it seems to work fairly well. It is a beta thing, so if it acts up, I have it poised to be ripped out at any minute. Let me know if your comments turn out unlike you intended, or you notice any other suspicious behavior. but for now, hitting [enter] is like adding a <br /> tag. :-)

14 Gone Away said on Wed Dec 31 23:00:01 EST
Excellent. It works!

15 Gone Away said on Wed Dec 31 23:00:01 EST

Josh, those rollovers are a work of genius. I find myself sitting here, running the mouse over them again and again, just to see them fill, empty, and refill again. Superb. All you need now (just to add to your coding probs) is the sound of a glass filling to accompany them... ;)

Not quite sure yet.

I am wondering where in the variable exchange I should place this function in order to minimize my headaches and the weight of the code (this particular page, permalink.php, comes in at ~ 50KB without images, and over 600 lines of code, which is huge).

This post is actually a test to see how it performs.

I am crossing my fangers.

I reset your cookies :>

I tried to automate the process, but I am not sure it works yet.

godspeed,
the management
